Lakeland Hosts 11th Annual Diabetes: Kids’ Activity Day
(ST. JOSEPH) – Children with diabetes and their parents can escape the winter cold and attend Lakeland HealthCare’s 11th Annual Diabetes: Kids’ Activities Day, scheduled from 9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, in the Frederick S. Upton Education Center at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.

This year the program will include a special guest, a cyclist from Team Type 1. The team, which completed the 3,000-mile Race Across America in record time last year, is comprised of eight cyclists, all of whom have type 1 diabetes. During the event, the cyclist will be available to talk with children and parents.

“The members of Team Type 1 are an inspiration for the estimated three million Americans with type 1 diabetes,” says Cheryl Perry, Coordinator, Diabetes Education, Lakeland HealthCare. “We’re thrilled that one of the cyclists will be coming to Lakeland to show kids that diabetes doesn’t have to keep them from pursuing their dreams.”

This free event is sponsored by the Plym Foundation in memory of Andrew Plym. The Plym Foundation has been a great supporter of Lakeland HealthCare and the health care needs of the community. Their generosity dates back to 1925, when they donated the funds to purchase and remodel the Dresden House. It later became Pawating Hospital, and is now known as Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles.

Children ages 4 to 12 will have the chance to win prizes, participate in fun learning activities, and meet other kids with diabetes. Parents will have the opportunity to network with each other while learning about the latest care options for their child. Two participants between the ages of 8 and 12 will be selected in a drawing to win a free scholarship to Camp Midicha, the American Diabetes Association’s camp in Fenton, Michigan.

All children attending the Diabetes: Kids Activity Day must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who should bring any diabetes care supplies needed during the event. Preregistration is required by Friday, February 26. To register or for more information, call (269) 927-5465 in St. Joseph or (269) 683-5510, ext. 5465 in Niles.
